Welcome, new listeners!
I am so delighted every time I see “new subscriber,” because suddenly a connection exists where the probability was otherwise infinitesimal that our minds would cross paths.
If you are here because of Samara’s recommendation on “How to Show Up”, a very special greeting to you. I have seen the incredible caliber of the women (and a few good men) she speaks to and works with. You are creating the new sound of power!
Here’s one of my favorite pictures of me with Samara.
I hope you don’t just listen to whatever my most recent song is, but dig in! The ones posted earlier are some of my best, and they’re all very different from each other. My song about Samara growing up is “A Life of Art.”
So, what is the Philosophical Cabaret anyway?
The world needs not only a new sound of power but a new sound of philosophy.
Philosophy needs to come back to its meaning of love of wisdom — not just an intellectual outlook or the possession of a Ph.D.
Love is a feeling!
For millennia men have beaten abstract questions of justice and existence into the ground, outdoing each other, sharpening daggers of logic, but has it touched us or made us better?
Lyrics of a song can respect how most humans naturally think – sometimes logically, but more often associatively and metaphorically – while music can give meaning a felt home in the heart and body.
There’s a reason that in countless ancient and indigenous societies songs were not just entertainment but the carriers and protectors of history, spirituality, and culture itself. The Iliad and the Odyssey were sung for centuries before being written down.
How will we ever remake this world with real living justice and real love of wisdom, without cultivating the feelings that art, especially music, carries? Feeling is what makes things matter! Mattering is what makes us care and commit.
Next song coming very soon!
P.S. to my friends: thank you so much for your lovely comments, but please post them here rather than in a personal email. Let’s build community!
I loved being reminded that “literature” was sung before being written!
Awww -- I love this!! "Music can give meaning a felt home in the heart and body." Was JUST listening to a list of "the best songs of 2024" yesterday getting philosophical (especially about the ones that didn't do it for me...) wondering why DO we listen to music if not to move or feel or connect?
